United Theological Seminary

United Upon a motion by Rev. Milton Wright, the General Conference of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ ordered founding of a theological seminary to be supported by the whole church.

Milton Wright, later elected bishop, served as first chairman of the executive committee of the seminary. Under his leadership the school was located in Dayton and at his proposal it received its first name, Union Biblical Seminary.

Rev. Milton Wright, a theology professor at Hartsville University in Indiana, was elected editor of the denomination’s weekly newspaper, Religious Telescope, at this same General Conference, and moved his family to Dayton where the denomination had located its publishing house in 1852.

Saint Paul School of Theology

title_about_sp Saint Paul School of Theology was one of two schools authorized by the 1956 General Conference of The Methodist Church.  Kansas City was selected as the location, due to the shortage of Methodist pastors in this part of the country.

Consequently, the central concern of Saint Paul School of Theology since it was chartered in 1958 has been the academic preparation for the practice of ministry. More than 85% of all Saint Paul graduates are now serving in pastoral ministry, most in local congregations.

Perkins School of Theology

Perkins Perkins School of Theology is one of the 13 seminaries of The United Methodist Church (and one of only five university-related United Methodist theological schools), located in the heart of Dallas, Texas, with an extension program in Houston or Galveston.

The faculty and staff of Perkins are committed to our mission of preparing women and men for leadership in the church of Jesus Christ. Students study with a faculty, diverse both culturally and in theological perspective, in the school’s graduate degree and certificate studies programs.

Methodist Theological School in Ohio

MTSO Following the 1956 General Conference of the Methodist Church, which authorized the establishment of a seminary in Ohio, provisional organization was formed to raise funds for the School. The Reverend John W. Dickhaut was appointed director of the organization. Within a year, $4 million had been raised, and a campus site had been selected and purchased. Some of the 70-acre site was donated by Ohio Wesleyan University.

In 1958, Methodist Theological School in Ohio was incorporated and The Reverend John Versteeg was commissioned by the provisional organization to begin the task of assembling a library. Construction of the campus first buildings began.

Iliff School of Theology

Iliff

  • Iliff was founded in 1892 to ensure the academic integrity of clergy in the Western United States.
  • Iliff is one of thirteen United Methodist seminaries in the United States.
  • The Iliff students, faculty, and staff come from a diversity of faith traditions.
  • Average enrollment is between 300 and 350 students; approximately 60% are women, and 40% are men. Class sizes range from 5 to 50 students.

Garrett-Evangelical

Garrett Garrett-Evangelical is a graduate school of theology related to The United Methodist Church. It is located a few miles north of Chicago on the Evanston campus of Northwestern University.

Garrett-Evangelical is the result of the interweaving of three institutions:

  • Garrett Biblical Institute, the first Methodist seminary in the Midwest, was established in 1853 by largely the same church people who founded Northwestern. Founders hoped that the school would shape mind and spirit toward an educated ministry.

Gammon Theological Seminary

Gammon The mission of Gammon Theological Seminary, a historically African American institution, in partnership with The Interdenominational Theological Center, is to recruit, support, and educate pastors and leaders for The United Methodist Church.

Gammon Theological Seminary had its beginning as Gammon School of Theology, first as a department of religion and philosophy at Clark University for the 1869-1870 academic year. In February 1872, Clark Theological Seminary was opened with 26 students.

Duke University, The Divinity School

Duke Founded in 1926 as the first of the university’s graduate professional schools, the Divinity School attracts students from around the nation and several different countries. One of 13 seminaries founded and supported by the United Methodist Church, the school has from its beginnings been ecumenical in aspiration, teaching, and practice. With many diverse theological perspectives, students find common ground through immersion in Scripture and the church’s tradition for addressing the challenges of faith in today’s world.
