Whitefield Theological Seminary derives its name from the eighteenth-century revivalist, George Whitefield. Rev. Whitefield was a man of compassion, dedicated to the preaching of the Gospel. Reformed in his theology, he was one of the major influences of the eighteenth century, both in the British Isles and in the Great Awakening in colonial America. He traveled throughout England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and America to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Several orphanages started under his oversight, and his special ministry for children was evidenced as he saved his income to bring Christian schoolteachers to the southern colonies. His great desire to establish a theological seminary in the South was never realized in his lifetime.
Westminster is committed to Scripture and to the systematic exposition of biblical truth known as the Reformed faith. The very name of the institution signals clearly that our systematic theology has been and remains an outworking of the theological documents known as the Westminster Standards. In addition to the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms, the Seminary treasures the rich and harmonious diversity of creeds and confessions within the historic Reformed tradition. In particular, it recognizes that the system of doctrine contained in Scripture is also confessed in the Three Forms of Unity (the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort).
Westminster Seminary California welcomed its first students in the fall of 1980. From the beginning, WSC committed itself to providing the finest in theological education with a particular focus on preparing men for pastoral ministry. The inerrancy of the Scriptures, the Gospel of Christ, the importance of the church and preaching, and the Reformed confessions have all guided the life and teaching of the Seminary.
Sangre de Cristo School for Biblical Studies was incorporated in 1976 as a non-profit institution. The school was first conceived and operated as a summer school from 1976 through 1978. In 1979 a full seminary program was begun with a somewhat unique schedule compared to traditional seminaries.
In June 1963, five ministers met in a Memphis hotel room to pray about the need to establish a new seminary. At that time there was no seminary in the southeastern United States holding to Reformed theology and committed to the Bible as God’s inerrant Word, the final authority for faith and life. When the meeting ended, the seed that would become Reformed Theological Seminary had been planted.

We confess that our supreme standard is the Word of God, namely the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. We adhere to the system of doctrine taught in the infallible Word of God, the Bible, as that system was clarified in the Reformation of the sixteenth century. We recognise our Reformational heritage as that set forth in the great Calvinistic Creed known as the Westminster Confession of Faith.
