That purpose is to establish and maintain a religious institution offering Christian educational programs. These programs include Bible, Pastoral Ministry, Christian Education, Theology, Christian Counseling and other related subjects. The main object is to prepare persons for full or part-time Christian service.

Bethany provides professional educational programs for the practitioner of ministry, the evangelist, the missionary, the education director, and those engaged in other areas of Christian service.

Bethany strives to equip these leaders with educational skills for the practice of ministry and Christian service, just as one would study for a vocation in Dentistry, Chiropractic, or Jurisprudence. While the education programs offered by Bethany are vocational by nature, it is recognized that the work of the ministry is of Divine calling.

Bethany’s program is flexible and attempts to provide sound training regardless of one’s educational background.

Bethany is cognizant of the high cost of the traditional classroom approach to teaching, and the difficulties so many students have in attending regular college classes. Although Bethany offers a traditional on-site program of study, its main objective is to provide a quality non-traditional education. This program was designed for those in the Christian community who find the on-campus approach impractical. Often it is not realistic to uproot the entire family, leave a current job, or resign a church or school employment to attend college.

Because of the need for a non-traditional methodology, Bethany developed a high quality, self-motivating and self-disciplining curriculum for the off-campus approach. The courses consist of conservative Bible teaching through textbooks, research, assignments and deductive reasoning.
To have an effective external program of study, it is necessary to have contact with the students . This is accomplished by requiring each student to maintain contact with the college every thirty to forty-five days. This gives an opportunity to report on progress, answer any questions, and discuss future goals.

Although there is much debate over the validity, methodology, and credibility of external studies, like other institutions, Bethany stands firm on this approach. The institution believes that the non-traditional approach offers one ingredient that is often missing in many traditional schools, self-discipline. With the proper tools and guidance, off-campus programs are as valid and credible as any other method of study.

We find that connective real-life, real-time technologies draw together our family of students, staff and parents. Such technologies include extensive use of live-class videoconferencing, instant messaging, voice and video messaging, email, and the extensive use of electronic discussion groups and forums.

These communications are often faster and more efficient than in-office communications. They tend at times to draw out an individual’s heart-felt thoughts more than face to face interactions. They also ensure equity, as each individual’s "voice" is heard equally. These electronic means of communication tend to invert the normal psychology of the classroom, encouraging equal expression to the most extroverted and introverted individuals.

FLDLA serves students in grades 9 – 12 throughout United States who choose Seventh-day Adventist education excellence
90% of all FLDLA students are from small school sites

Current enrollment: 120 in grades 9 – 12

Classes are taught via delivered via live, interactive video conferencing sessions each day between all students and teachers

Course work is taught by Master Teachers using web-based technologies including: secure website with access to assignments, discussion forums and grades; webcam, instant messaging, email, telephone and fax FLDLA’s unique curriculum is designed around service learning, leadership, Habits of Mind and Christ-like qualities

FLDLA offers College Prep and General Diplomas awarded through Forest Lake Academy via a full compliment of accredited high school classes

Students may participate in mission trips 2-3 times per year to national and international locations to emphasize service learning Check out our FAQ page for more information!

FLDLA provides a complete, fully accredited curriculum for grades 9-12, including four years of English and Bible; three years of history, math, and sciences (including lab sciences), two years of foreign languages,as well as a number of one-year or one-semester courses like art appreciation. We are accredited through the North American Division (NAD), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Commission on International and Tran-Regional Accreditation (CITA is the distance learning division of SACS).

Through a consortium arrangement with Forest Lake Academy (a fully accredited high school), and the Southern Union Office of Education, secondary students receive credits from Forest Lake Academy and seniors graduate with a Forest Lake Academy diploma . Credits are recognized by other high schools and colleges throughout the U.S. This educational service is primarily sponsored by the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and its management is overseen by the Florida Conference Office of Education and K-12 Board of Education.

By providing quality educational options, AE21 keeps our youth connected to the church, to Adventist education, and encourages more Adventist high school graduates to seek church-sponsored higher education. AE21 students take charge of their learning experiences and develop technological and creative skills necessary for 21 st century work environments. Course work is taught via web-based technologies and class discussion is enabled by real time interactive videoconferencing. Off-camera student contact with the teacher is maintained through a website, instant messaging, e-mail, and the telephone. Local facilitators link with teachers and parents to support class work and management issues at the local site. Aside from its technological format, AE21 operates with a distinctive future-oriented curriculum that demonstrates that SDA education can adapt in significant ways to meet the needs of the students. The AE21 curriculum is built around the tenets of the North American Division Journey to Excellence Document which include these 10 essential components:

Acceptance of God

Commitment to the Church

Healthy Interpersonal Relationships

Responsible Citizenship

Balanced Living

Intellectual Development

Communication Skills

Personal Management

Aesthetic Appreciation

Career and Service

In addition, this curriculum strives to bring several key beliefs into reality for students :

God has created each individual with a specific set of gifts, traits, and talents that He wishes to use for mankind’s benefit. Each student needs to develop these gifts so that he or she can be ready for God’s eventual calling.

Each of us is a member of a world community and as such, we should develop an appreciation and immersion in cultures other than our own. Because of this, we should be literate and fluent in at least one non-birth language.

Service should be an active, ongoing part of our every day living, and we should look for ways to serve others in need. Mission trips are scheduled twice a year for students to develop their service skills.

Integrated curriculum maintains a higher relevance and application value for students.

Student work receives summative as well as formative evaluation and is assessed primarily through the production of student portfolios.

Students develop a value for life-long learning and realize that in the work world of their future, they will frequently retrain for additional skills in an ever-changing work place.

Principles are non-negotiable.

We continue today with the same generous evangelical vision that prompted him to start the College in the first place. People smile when I talk of Spurgeon’s College training "attractive, evangelical" ministers and leaders for the twenty-first century. It is the word ‘attractive’ that raises the smile.

By ‘attractive’ I mean men and women who will attract others to the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is was what Spurgeon had in mind throughout his remarkable ministry which attracted thousands of people to his church in London. Our intention is to see people prepared for a ministry that will be evangelical to its core and relevant to the challenges and opportunities that our modern culture offers.

So there has to be a blend of practical training for mission and ministry with theological teaching that is both spiritual and biblical. This is the ethos of Spurgeon’s College where our community is centred on God’s word, rooted in our daily worship and expressed in practical service. Spurgeon’s is also accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC) for Independent Further and Higher Education as an Independent Higher Education Institution. The BAC inspectors commented in their report that, ‘This is an excellent institution which provides top-rate academic and professional theological education’.

As you look through this web site I am confident you will find a course to suit your needs. Some of our students keep the day job, and come to College one day a week to take advantage of our part-time training. Others have the opportunity to serve in a church whilst they train, and there are those for whom the college-based course is the right way forward. But for those who cannot attend in person we offer the Online Learning programme with courses that are both practical and theological.

Postgraduate opportunities abound at Spurgeon’s College. From our Centre for Continuing Development in Ministry, to a good range of Master’s courses, to research for a Doctorate the same care is taken to provide a blend of support and lifelong learning to those wishing to enhance their training.

Right from the time of its inception and nonformal activities, theological radicals were unhappy about the conservative stand of ICAATS. Many of them realized that a large international body of scholars will soon join it because it was started by missionaries, giving a diffucult time to the smaller accrediting agencies manned by theological radicsls.

History

ICAATS was born in the 1950s, almost a decade earlier than the accrediting system came into existance in the USA. Though it is only half a century of accreditation in the USA, the process has been subjected to so much propaganda that most people do not have any idea of what accreditation means.

Most people think that accreditation is some kind of a government mandate. Others think that accreditation is a compulsory process of colleges and universities. Both of these are wrong ideas. First, accreditation is a totally voluntary process and there is no government compulsion that an educational institution should be accredited.

Second, accreditation in USA is a totally private affair. It is done by private NGO’s and there is no government intervention. What is more, the separation of church and state has kept accreditation of religious organizations totally out of the hand of the American government.

India being a secular country, it also strictly follows church-state separation. ICAATS came into existance in the free India because some foreign missionaries were concerned about the quality of theological education when local leadership took control of theological institutions.

The School of Christ International, now functioning in many countries of the world, has proven to be one of the most effective toolsfor world evangelism in the history of missions. The entire focus of the School of Christ is to train and send the native to his or her own people.

The Birth of the School: In 1971, Mrs. Clendennen, and I went to Kinshasa, Zaire, for what turned out to be a very successful Gospel Crusade. Thousands of people attended the meetings. Night after night the power of God was present to save and to heal. During the course of the meeting literally thousands came forward in answer to the call for salvation. God had surely visited that city.

One year later, we returned to Kinshasu for ministry, and while visiting with the pastors and leaders of the church, we were shocked to discover how little real lasting results came out of the crusade. At this point I made the decision that would ultimately set the course of my own life and ministry, and change the way millions would view the work of world missions. This was truly the “burning bush” of my life.

Sitting in meetings with the pastors and leaders of the Zaire church, the decision was made that all of the overseas travel and ministry would be directed to pastors and leaders of the church. There would be no more expensive crusades in countries where the church was already established. In that moment, I resolved to spend my life challenging and stirring the heart of God’s servants. In a study of Nehemiah, I saw this is the plan of God.

Nehemiah was sent back to Jerusalem to rebuild the city. After looking the city over and seeing the walls were torn down and the gates were burned out, Nehemiah challenged the people with him to rise up and build. As I studied this great book I learned that the walls are the Kingdom, and the gates are ministry. There were ten gates in the walls, and the whole of the third chapter is given to putting the gates in place. Once the gates ministry, were in place the walls came up around them. Through this God showed me that life does not come out of the church, the church comes out of life. I saw that if God could use me to bring life to His preachers, and they in turn would birth His life, then things would happen. A church would be born and God would live through His people.
The School Is Born

For the next twenty years, my quest for truth was with a preacher in mind. All of my thoughts were directed toward the man of God. In my search for this Rhema, I had a long look at the men of the Bible who were used of God. As I looked into the lives of these men, I made this great discovery that governed my thinking throughout the entire search. God’s dealing with these men was not just to teach them truth, but to make them the “truth” they preached. They must ultimately become the message.

Over the next two decades as I traveled and preached to preachers all over the world, little did I know that the truth I was gathering was to become what is now known as The School of Christ. In God’s light there is life. As we move in what we perceive to be the will of God for the time, though we may not be aware of it, we may be moving into a much larger spiritual arena. Out of two decades of travel and ministry to preachers around the world came one of the most powerful missionary tools in the history of Missions: The School of Christ International.

In the gathering of the material, God spoke to me in many ways. As I read and prayed, God used many different means to bring the revelation to my spirit. I read God’s Word and begged Him to speak to me. I listened to men of God preach, I read books of men whom God had revealed Himself. Slowly, the truth was etched in my spirit. The truth I sought and found become mine.

In the mid-seventies, two books were given to me that set the course of my thinking. Those books were, “Union With Christ” and “The School of Christ” by T. Austin Sparks. For the first time in my preaching, I truly saw what the church is according to God’s mind. I knew at once, that this was the message that God called men must hear.
Russia Opens to the Gospel

In October 1991, my wife, my granddaughter, and I went to Russia on what I called a fact-finding trip. I went to see what we could do to help the church fill the awful spiritual vacuum created by seventy-five years of atheism. What we experienced changed our lives forever. I had been in many countries of the world, but never had I witnessed the hunger I found in Russia. As I ministered to people, God put such a love in my heart for them, that I knew I had not merely come to Russia, I had been sent. I did not know at that point, what my entire ministry would be, but I knew I would move to Russia.

The last day of our visit, God confirmed the call. I was ministering to a small congregation on the outskirts of Moscow. As I spoke on the subject of prayer the Spirit of God broke us. The entire group fell on their face and began to pray. As I was praying I felt a hand upon my arm, and when I looked up there was an elderly woman prophesying to me. I later learned that her husband had been a Pentecostal preacher, and had been murdered by the KGB. She now spent much of her time in the church praying. My interpreter, Igor, told me they had not known her to prophesy before. God’s message to me through this saintly woman was: “All that you have ever suffered, all that you have learned, all that you ever did was to prepare you for what I will do with you in this country.”

1st school in Russia At the end of October I returned to America, and in November 1991 I resigned the church I founded and pastored for 35 years. In December I returned to Russia for three weeks. During this stay I preached in cities of hundreds of thousands that had no church. In the Caucus I preached to over seventeen hundred people, sixteen hundred of them came forward to be saved. When I left them there was no shepherd to look after the new born. I knew then what God would have me to do. The vision of a three month Bible school was born. I came home to gather the materials for the school and move to Russia.

As I was preparing the lessons, working out the schedule of the school and thinking on how the discipline of the school should be, the scripture in Luke 16:8 came to me, “…for the children of this world are in their generation wiser that the children of light.” With that scripture my mind was carried back to the outbreak of World War II. I had just graduated from high school when the news broke. In a short time, I joined the U. S. Marines, and in one week I was in what they called boot camp. For twelve weeks, I went through the most intense discipline, and training I ever dreamed possible. What were they doing? Transforming young men fresh out of school, fresh from the farm and the city, into men of war. And they meant to do it in twelve weeks. This became the pattern for the School of Christ.

The students are brought to the school, and for three months they do not leave unless there is an emergency. For three months they are totally immersed in prayer and the Word of God. The prayer meeting begins before day light every morning, and is the last act in the evening. The prayer meetings are not optional, they are regular classes. You only learn prayer by praying. Without prayer Bible schools are merely doctrine. The discipline and the curriculum of the school weeds out those who are not called.
A Short History of the School

On October 1, 1992, the first School of Christ was born. One hundred and two students from all across the former Soviet Union came to be trained. Three months later, Christmas 1992, we graduated one hundred of that one hundred and two students and sent them forth into cities and villages where the Gospel had not been preached and to plant the church of Jesus Christ. Five and one half years later, there were 2,000 native missionaries who had graduated the School of Christ and have gone forth to plant over 3,000 new churches, and the number is growing everyday.

In April 1995, we took the School of Christ into Peru. Two years later, we had over 500 native missionaries, trained in the School of Christ who had planted over 300 new churches. We have moved from Peru to all but four countries of South America. The School is in, or is in the process of moving into every country in Central America. At the end of 2000 the School of Christ was in every Spanish speaking country on earth. In every country where the School is functioning the results are the same.

Since 2000, the School has literally been around the world. Bro. Clendennen just recently returned from China, Europe and Russia with the School. Our latest report out of India is the testimony of revival, a nation where one of every six humans live. We are graduating four hundred students a month, and they are spreading the flames of revival across the subcontinent. The School has been into Eygpt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and will be going into Israel soon. If all goes as planned, in the next twelve months we will have the School in every Moslem nation.

The first week of October 2004 we open the first School of Christ in Albania. Albania is the modern name of Illyricum mentioned in Romans 15:19. From Albania, in the next eighteen months, we will disciple Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia and Greece. We will rekindle the fire started by the Apostle Paul two thousand years ago

August of this year, the School of Christ was named the official voice for sixty-nine prisons in twenty-seven states. The prison officials have given us two hours a day, five days a week.

October of 2004, will be our twelth year. In that short time, the School of Christ has literally covered the globe making it perhaps the most effective missions tool ever. We are now in well over 100 nations and the demand for the school continues to grow. The pace at which the school is now moving defies imagination, this can only be by the workings of the Holy Spirit.
